In Shanggan Town of Minhou County, Fujian, the Tao River winds around the land while Wuhu Mountain rises to the front, shaping a landscape that has nurtured a rich cultural heritage. Since ancient times, this area has been known for its strong scholarly tradition and numerous academies. Among them, Taojiang Academy and Taonan Academy stand out as the most representative, bearing witness to a local educational legacy that has continued for centuries.
Taojiang Academy was first established during the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty and once served as a place where local peoplepursued their studies. Taonan Academy, built in 1906, was initiated and named by Chen Baochen, a prominent official in the late Qing Dynasty. The two academies stand side by side, both facing south with traditional layouts featuring three courtyards and two inner patios. Covering a total area of over 2,000 square meters, they are known for their orderly design and understated, classical elegance.
Today, the upper floor of Taojiang Academy has been repurposed as a venue for poetry gatherings, while Taonan Academy serves as a space for displaying school history. Though the two academies have experienced periods of decline and revival, the cultural lineage they embody has never been broken. From Shanggan to wider Minhou, this enduring scholarly spirit continues to nourish local culture. Rooted in a deep educational tradition, the region has consistently produced talented individuals, carrying forward Minhou’s cultural memory across generations.
