Narcissus flowers have been cultivated in Zhangzhou for more than 500 years. With their unique shape and pleasant fragrance, Zhangzhou narcissus are well known both in China and abroad. These flowers can be carefully shaped by hand into artistic works, a skill that local craftsmen in Zhangzhou are especially good at. They use knives to carve the bulbs, shaping them according to their natural form. Although made by human hands, these potted flowers look as if they were created by nature itself, forming a unique narcissus culture in Zhangzhou.
In 1984 and 1997, the narcissus was named the city flower of Zhangzhou and the provincial flower of Fujian, and it was also selected as one of China’s top ten traditional famous flowers.
