Fuzhou has had a Monkey King worship tradition dating back to the Song Dynasty.
Today, there are hundreds of local community temples centered around the Monkey King as the main deity.
One of these, located at the Zizhuyan Qitian Cave Temple on Fuzhou's Ping Mountain, is considered the "ancestral temple" of the Great Sage belief in Fuzhou. The Monkey King worship tradition that predates Wu Cheng'en's Ming Dynasty novel Journey to the West.
