Eastern Pass Stockade in Fuqing was constructed in the 1st year of the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty. It is the best-preserved castle-style ancient residential complex of the Qing Dynasty in Fuqing.
Built along mountain terrain, its nearly 10-meter-high outer walls are stacked with solid granite boulders, fitted with evenly spaced watchtowers and embrasures for full defensive capability. Inside, 99 interconnected houses are neatly arranged along a central axis with an ingenious compact layout.
It adopts defensive features of Hakka tulou while incorporating construction wisdom of coastal Fujian dwellings, ranking as a treasure of local vernacular architecture in Fuqing.
