Baofengyan Temple, Donggong Mountain, Zhenghe

Baofengyan Temple on Zhenghe’s Donggong Mountain is hidden beneath a giant mountain rock, a late-Tang grotto shrine built entirely against natural stone without brick wall masonry, boasting ingenious natural architecture.

The spacious cool grotto houses a Song stone Buddha and Yuan Dynasty stone steles, with mountain waterfalls trickling down rock faces year-round amid green bamboo and wild azaleas. The mountain trail sees few tourists, shielded from worldly chaos. Sitting quietly beneath the rock listening to flowing water and mountain wind instantly calms the heart.

Merging marvelous natural rock formations with millennial Buddhist heritage, it lets visitors hike through untouched mountain scenery and rest alone within the empty grotto shrine for immersive wild mountain healing, an off-the-beaten-path hidden relic in northern Fujian.
