In Luozhou, Fuzhou, Cangshan District of Fuzhou, there stands a century-old residence known as the “Chen Family’s Five Mansions,” also called the Former Residence of Chen Baochen. Its owner, Chen Baochen, was the tutor of Puyi, the last emperor of China, and a pioneer of modern education in Fuzhou.
The architectural complex was not constructed all at once, but gradually completed over nearly thirty years. It includes five structures such as Cishu Buildingand Cangqu Building, each with its own story, quietly bearing witness to the passage of time. The complex artfully blends Chinese and Western architectural styles, combining the elegance of southern private gardens with the grandeur of northern courtyards. It was once the largest private library complex in Fuzhou.
Today, the Chen Family’s Five Mansions has become a key stop along Luozhou’s historical and cultural tour route.
