The waters of Xiapu are vast and rich in fishery resources. Fisheries are a pillar of the local economy. In recent years, the sea cucumber industry has become a newly rising "blue engine." The county has built a complete industrial chain that includes breeding, farming, processing, and sales.
There is a saying: "For southern sea cucumbers, look to Fujian; for Fujian sea cucumbers, look to Xiapu." However, more than 20 years ago, Xiapu did not produce sea cucumbers at all. Its first connection with sea cucumbers began in 2003. In November of that year, Xiapu County introduced sea cucumber seedlings from Changdao, Shandong. Half a year later, tests showed an average survival rate of 86%, breaking the long-held belief that sea cucumbers could not be farmed in southern China.
