Mazu, originally named Lin Mo, was born on Meizhou Island in Putian, Fujian. From a young age, she was exceptionally intelligent and had a deep knowledge of astronomy and meteorology. She dedicated her life to doing good and helping people. Sheperished while rescuing sailors during a storm. In her honor, a shrine was erected on Meizhou Island shortly after her passing, where she was worshipped as the protector of sailors, thus earning the title "Mazu".
