GENEVA, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) will celebrate its 70th anniversary this year, with a range of events aimed at attracting the younger generations and making science more accessible.

"We want to inspire people with the beauty of science, especially to attract young people, since society desperately needs new talents. We also want to contribute to increasing the participation of science in today's society," CERN Director-General Fabiola Gianotti said on Monday.

Under the theme "CERN at 70: Inspiring the Future," six public events will be held in the first half of the year, ending Oct. 1 with a closing ceremony.

The first event will be on Jan. 30. A summit called "Unveiling the Universe" will be hosted by prestigious artists and scientists.

Home to the world's most powerful particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider, CERN serves as a collaborative platform in nuclear and particle physics research.

To attract global young talents and make the achievements of CERN accessible to all, targeted programs have been established to engage undergraduates and graduates in physics, computing and engineering, said Gianotti. ■
